Akubras and Boots Make Perfect Companions

February 17, 2012

Two of our Akubra retailers were gracious enough to send us photos of an Akubra atop their boots. We are proud that these companies offer Akubra hats alongside their superbly crafted boots.

WESA: 2012

February 3, 2012

Will and Mike took another trip to WESA (Western and English Sales Association) this past January. They met old friends and made some new ones, including vendors from Canada and Mexico.

Highlights of the trip included the fashion show, where vendors showed-off their latest designs. It was fun visiting with the neighbors. Some of the slow times were broken up with impromptu jams in the hallway.

We’ll see you next year!

Akubras and Rain

November 23, 2011

Akubra hats are designed to protect you from the sun and rain. The felt is dyed and no powders are added. This means that you do not have to worry that your hat will streak if it gets wet.

When you wear your hat in a brief shower, the water will first bead up — in a light rain, you may never see the felt absorb the water. In a heavy shower or a long walk in the rain, the felt will get wet. However, the water will not seep through the hat. Felt provides good insulation when wet, so you will remain comfortable.

Whenever your hat gets wet, let it air dry. Do not put it near a heat source, since heat may shrink the hat. Hang it on a hook, if possible. If you do not have a hook, rest it on its crown. Leaving a hat on its brim will flatten and distort the brim.

Below we’ve pictured David’s thirty-something year old Bushman. He wears it on his daily walk. In the Pacific Northwest, a hat is essential in the winter.

WESA Fall 2011 a Success

October 14, 2011

Will Morgan recently finished another adventure to WESA (The Western and Equestrian Sales Association.) The trip from Seattle to Denver meant the opportunity to drive through some of the most beautiful country in the US.

Through seven states (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah) the trip offered majestic scenery and plenty of wide-open spaces. The bright sunshine and wind showed the importance of having a hat. Speaking of wind, as they say in the west, if the wind stops blowing, everyone falls down!

What is Oprah’s Favorite Akubra? – Update

May 20, 2011

Last fall we posted that Oprah would take an adventure to Australia. (See below.) We speculated that she was wearing a Cattleman.

Recently the Washington Post spotted her with Ralph Lauren at his ranch in Telluride, Colorado. She is indeed wearing a Cattleman. The color is regency fawn.

Original Post From Last February:

This December Oprah will go on an adventure to Australia with 300 of her fans.

We’re sure she’ll have a great trip, after all, she’s already got her hat. Speaking of hats, is that an Akubra Cattleman that she’s wearing?

Update:  See more photos from Hat Life.

Stylemaster Now Available in Acorn

May 6, 2011

New at David Morgan is the acorn colored Stylemaster. While our carbon gray is a fine neutral color that complements much of your wardrobe, the acorn works best with earth tones.

The Stylemaster is popular with men of all ages. The 2 1/2 inch brim is ideal with younger men and the overall elegance of the hat attracts those looking for a classic style.

The pinched telescope crown is 4 1/4 inches at the front, rising to 4 3/4 inches on the side and then down to 3 7/8 inches in the back. The bound edge adds a distinguished touch. The brim is usually snapped down in front and up in back.

How to Make a Long Oval

January 14, 2011

When you first purchase a hat, you may be surprised that, even though it’s the right size, it may not sit properly on your head. Like a pair of jeans or shoes, a hat may need time to adjust to the shape of your head. And for many people, their head is a little longer then the normal shape of the hat. If this is the case, then your head is a long oval.

With a long oval, the hat must be elongated from the front to the back. This will pull the sides in closer to the head. There are two methods of shaping the hat.

One tried and true way is to follow the old cowboys. Get the hat wet and wear it until it dries.  Wetting the hat loosens the felt enough to conform to your head shape. Once you wear the hat and continue to wear it, it will maintain its shape.

The second way is much easier. All you need is a hat stretcher and a tea kettle.  David will show you the rest:

Indy Should Have Worn an Akubra

October 14, 2010

We know Akubra means quality. But nothing speaks better than personal testimony.  We received this story from Mr. Gordon McDonald, whose Akubra experienced a trial of Biblical proportions.

I just wanted to tell you about the fantastic quality of your Akubra hats and an interesting story.

Last year my family and I moved to Jerusalem, Israel to attend university.

I purchased one of your hats for both style, quality and the brand “an Australian icon”.

Qumran_Judean_Desert_Israel

Last January, while visiting the ancient site of Qumran ( the home of the Dead Sea Scrolls ) I lent my Akubra hat to my wife, as it was quite chilly. Well within twenty minutes a gust of wind blew it off her head and landed in the deepest cistern (well) at the archaeological site. Probably about 15-20 metres deep.

The park/site authorities had no means of getting my beloved hat out of the cistern.

It rained several times throughout our winter months and sustained temperatures of +40C (104 F).

As I visited the site a few times, I noticed my Akubra hat would rise and sink a few inches, mainly due to water collecting when it did rain.

Finally, eight months later, I got a fishing line, 3 barbed fishing hook and a sinker and retrieved my hat.  It was covered with all sorts of dust and dirt.

When I came home, I used my trusty Miele vacuum cleaner to remove the dirt as best as possible.

Well, the photos tell the rest of the story, as it may fit a little tighter, but my hat was restored to its nearly pristine condition.

I as well as my colleagues can’t believe that the hat looks as good as it does, with being in the cistern in the harsh Judean wilderness for 8 months.

Thank you for making such a great product. This is one hat, I will always treasure.

Thanks for a wonderful story. Akubra always holds up in a pinch.
