Our stampede string isn't only for ranchers working cattle on the open range. Anyone who wants to keep their hat from blowing away will find it useful. Like our chin strap, a sliding knot joins together two, four plait braids of kangaroo leather. It is ideal for both our Heritage Collection and Panama hats that do not have chin strap hooks. Two cotter pins slide between the sweatband and the hat body. Once bent, they provide a secure attachment of the stampede string. Our own production, made in the USA.

Do you live outside the US? Due to strict US export regulations, we are only able to ship kangaroo leather products outside the US by adhering to the US Fish and Wildlife Service export inspection procedures.

  • Stampede String or Chin Strap?

Chin straps, known in cattle country as stampede strings, ensure against loss of your hat in wind or brush. Most of the Akubras we offer have chin strap hooks set inside the crown. [Akubra Hats with Chin Strap Hooks]

If you purchased an Akubra without Chin Strap Hooks or one of our other fine styles of hats, we recommend our Stampede String.

If you have an Akubra not purchased from us, you will have to check to see if it has chin strap hooks inside the crown. The chin strap hooks are put on the Akubra hats especially for us, and many Akubra's available elsewhere do not have the hooks. Our Stampede String is a good alternative for most hats without chin strap hooks.
