Blacksnakes developed from the old shot loaded team whips. They are the traditional whips used in Montana and Wyoming. While for the most part working cowboys there do not use a whip constantly as do Australians, they prefer a blacksnake when moving cattle to or from the high forest summer pastures, or when moving range bulls. The blacksnake or shot whip has a heavy shot load extending from the butt well down the thong. The whip is flexible right to the butt.
Once commonly carried in the saddlebag by cowboys of the old west, the pocket snake has not been available for many years. The pocket snake is primarily a whip for occasional use, as in loading cattle. It has a smaller butt diameter than the blacksnakes (approximately ⅝ inch), and will roll up small enough to be carried in a pocket. The shot load extends well down the whip. 12 plait kangaroo overlay, finely cut. Wire wound butt. Length is 6 ft. plus fall. Color is Natural Tan. The pocket snake is our own production.
