The Islender was the sweater of choice of the Arctic and Antarctic explorers in the early 1900's. The bulky knit sweater fits on the body, but by virtue of the elasticity of the wool and the give in the knitted fabric, is not at all constraining. Made from pure new wool, with a crew neck, ribbed cuffs and waist. Back length of a size L(42) is 28 inches. The weight is about 2 pounds, with a bulky knit. Color is Natural White with Anthracite (charcoal) patterning. Hand washable. Designed in Norway, made in Lithuania by Devold.

The Islender, a sweater with a long history, is one of the Devold Classic collection, originally developed in the mid-1800's. Based on sweaters worn by the Norwegian fishermen working in the northern waters off Iceland and Greenland, the Classic sweaters became the sweaters of choice of the early Arctic and Antarctic explorers. The Islender was the pattern worn by Fridtjof Nansen when he crossed the Greenland ice cap on skis in 1888, and by four Norwegians retracing his epic journey 100 years later. Roald Amundsen wore the Islender when he traversed the Northwest Passage in 1905, and later when he was the first to reach the South Pole in 1911. When you visit the polar vessel 'Fram' in the museum in Oslo, you will see Amundsen's Islender lying in a corner of the cabin looking as if a good washing would make it like new. This bulky knit sweater is very warm, but benefits from layering under a wind and water resistant jacket when the weather turns wet or the wind howls.
