Sand dollars, relatives of the starfish and sea urchin, live in large aggregations in shallow water near the shore. The skeletons from those that have died are washed ashore by the waves, often in great numbers after a storm. Children break them open to find the five angels - the five jawbones used to chew its food - that with a child's imagination can be seen as little angels.
